About this album

Eminent Performers and Preceptors in Music are known as Maestros. Maestros are viewed as models to be emulated. The contribution given by them to their time has established high standards in music. Saregama HMV have preserved this treasure in their Musical exchequer since years.

Pandit Rambhau Kundgolkar, born in 1886 in Kundgol (now in Karnataka) was basically a Dhrupad Dhamar artiste and associated as a singer-actor with the legendary Marathi Musical Theatre. The richest singing presented by him on the Stage fetched him the title 'Sawai Gandharva' which means a Superior Singer/ Artiste.

When Pandit Sawai Gandharva joined the tutelage of Ustad Abdul Karim Khan of Kirana Gharana he flourished as a Classical singer par excellence. Ustadji trained him in his self-innovated Voice Culture. Panditiji was also guided by Ustad Nasir Hussain Khan of Gwalior Gharana and Pandit Bhaskarbuwa Bhakhle.

This made Pandit Sawai Gandharva evolve a distinct style of his own. Along with his Guruji Ustad karim Khan, he shares equal credit in fetching recognition to their Kirana Gharana.

Panditji enjoyed peaceful aalaapi and there was a piquant flavor in his taans. Systematic elaboration of ragas was his forte. He excelled in Raga Sangeet, Natya sangeet and Bhajans. Besides being a very good artiste he was a Great Guru of Great Disciples. Dr.Gangubai Hangal, Pandit Bhimsen Jpshi, Pandit Foroz Dastur, Pandit kagalkarbuwa and Smt. Indirabai Khadilkar were groomed by Pandit Sawai Gandharva. Pandit Sawai Gandharva left for heavenly abode om 12 September 1952 in Pune. However his memory has been cherished for the last fifty years in the form of two prestigious 'Sawai Gandharva Music Festivals'. Dr. Gangubai hangal in Kundgol and Pandit Bhimsen Joshi in Pune have been the guiding spirits behind these festivals.
