As a child prodigy at the age of 2 1/2 years, Sowmya received her early Music Lessons from her father, Dr. M. Srinivasan, and later came under the influence of Sangeetha kalanidhi Dr. S. Ramanathan and blossomed into a fine concert vocalist straight away. She also sharpened her skills under celebrated vocalist Smt. T. Muktha.

Winning Gold Medals and prizes from Music Competitions at school and college levels became a regular habit for her and she followed this up by a bagging several awards from Music Academy, Tamil Isai Sangam, All India Radio etc.

Her melodious music has enthralled audiences all over the world including USA, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and Muscat.

She is an 'A' Grade Artiste of All India Radio. She is also intensively involved in the propagation of Tamil Isai.

A Gold Medallists in B.Sc. (Chemistry), she also holds an M.Sc. (Chemistry) from I.I.T. Madras. She is an I.I.T Blue which honor is bestowed on students excelling in Academic and Cultural activities. She is doing M.A. in Music having already secured 1st Rank in B.A. Music.

Sowmya will be the proud recipient of the prestigious, 'Isai Peroli' Award instituted by Kartik Fine Arts for the 1996.
