About this album

Born into a family steeped in classical music, Ranjani and Gayatri's musical talents were discovered at a very early age. The sisters, even as toddlers, showed an uncanny capacity to grasp the subtle nuances of Carnatic music.

The gifted sisters learnt violin from Sangita Bhushanam T.S.Krishnaswami and made their debut when they were just 13 and 10 years old respectively. They have made a name for themselves as violinists par excellence, both as duet artistes and accompanists.

Ranjani and Gayatri made the leap from violin to vocal with effortless ease and confidence. They received their initial vocal training from their mother Meenakshi Balasubramanian, and now continue to learn from the renowned musician and veteran teacher P.S.Narayanaswamy. Endowed with naturally gifted, strong and pliant voices, their music is an appealing blend of melody, weight and emotion. The sisters have carved a niche for themselves and are recognized as popular, rising stars of the present generation of Carnatic musicians. Their performances have earned rare reviews from discerning critics. Their soulful music has won appreciation in India and abroad. They are 'A' Grade Artists of All India Radio and Doordarshan.

The collection of songs presented in Pravaaham encompasses a tapestry of moods and emotions in a vibrant flow of melody. The sublime 'Nada tanu mansisham', the evergreen 'Seetapati', the swaying 'Kalyana gopalam', the lively 'Muddugare' and the moving Tulsidas bhajan - all these blend together to create unalloyed melody that pleases the ear and touches the heart. The intensely emotional viruttam rendered in ragas Kedaragowla, Mohanam and Hindolam, and the inspiring Bharatiyar and Hindolam, and the inspiring Bharatiyar composition tuned in Hamirkalyani, Bageshri, Chandrakauns and Durga add yet another dimension to the panoroma of ideas and feelings explored by Ranjani and Gayatri.

A special feature of this album is that Ranjani and Gayatri have themselves provided violin accompaniment.
