Gangubai Hangal

About this album

Vimla Devi Foundation Nyas, Ayodhya has been established in the pious memory of the Late Rajkumari Vimla Devi of Ayodhya estate by her grandson Yatindra Mishra, on December 13, 1999. The princess was a talented semi-classical and Awadhi folk singer. She was very keen to promote all forms of music to bring to the fore the cultural panorama of India.

This foundation aims at working for reinvigoration and preservation of Indian Culture, Philosophy, Arts, Literature and Music. With these objects in view, the foundation organizes a series of music programmes every year and awards Vimla Devi Samman to the maestros for their contribution.

As a new step in this direction, the Foundation has come out with some Landmark recordings of live concerts. It will be a matter of great satisfaction for the Foundation to provide the world of music with the rare repertoire.

Gangubai Hangal is respected as one of the most outstanding classical vocalists of India. She was born at Dharwad on March 5, 1913 into a family of musicians. Her mother Ambabai was already a renowned Carnatic vocalist and trained her daughter from a very young age.

She had further training from Hulgur Krishna Acharya. Gangubai's initiation into the 'Kirana' Gharana was under the legendary 'Sawai Gandharva' Rambhau Kundoolkar, a pupil of Abdul Karim Khan, the pioneer of the 'Kirana' gharana. In her musical career of over six decades, Gangubai has steadfastly preserved the essence of this gharana. Her unique voice carries the musical intensity of emotion.

She was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2001, and many other awards and honors were bestowed on her. Gangubai has performed widely in India and abroad. Her distinguished services to music include being on the faculty of Karnataks University and as a
nominated Member of the State Legislative for 16 years.
