About this album
With Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra as director, Rahman has to go on a different trip from his nutritious Gowariker-Ghai tenors. As in Aks and Rang De Basanti (also done by Rahman), the songs are extremely situation-specific, as are the lyrics by Prasoon Joshi While Masakali matakali (Mohit Chauhan's rendition is brilliantly Rahman-esque) is the new catchphrase of the nation, the fact remains that it has not much more than that phrase to 'hook' (pun intended) the listener, though in these musically-degenerate days that's enough to send listeners into a frenzy. But after listening to the album thrice over, the tracks that remain entrenched in memory are, in that order, Genda phool (lead vocals by Rekha Bhardwaj) and Arziyaan (Javed Ali-Kailash Kher). Rehna tu lacks the punch of Rahman-rendered songs in Jaane Tu...Ya Jaane Na, Guru, Jodhaa Akbar et al. Dilli 6 and Dil gira dafatan are crazy tracks that will fit into the film and Shreya is superb in Bhor bhaye, a track that blends a sampler of Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. In short, Delhi-6 is a well-done potpourri of songs that you will love or hate, tango to or alternatively savour years later. Yes, the sheer variety wins the race.
