About this album

Born at Srinagar, the eminent Santoor maeatro and Music Director Bhajan Sopori is the great grandson of Pandit Shankar Pandit, the great master who developed the style of Santoor playing popularly known as the Soofi Baj, based on the Soofiana Kalaam Gayaki (the traditional music of Kashmir) and Hindustani classical music. Bhajan Sopori was initiated into Santoor playing by his grandfather Pandit S.C.Sopori, and later by his father Pandit S.N.Sopori, the veteran musician of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, under whom he had rigorous training, which provided him a strong traditional base of Raga Sangeet combining both the Gayaki and Tantrakari Angas in his instrument. Bhajan Sopori has been the pioneer in developing the Santoor as a complete solo instrument bringing it at par with Sitar and sarod in Tantrakari and Boles and giving it the honour and prestige of a concert instrument.

Rendition of Dhrupad Ang on Santoor with the accompaniment of Pakhawaj is also a part of his innovations on Santoor. His recitals demonstrate a high technical virtuosity. His intricate legendary layakari and 'Chhandkari', Speedy 'Taan' patterns, running through three octaves and melodious Alaap leave a scintillating effect on the listeners.

Bhajan Sopori is a widely traveled person and has performed at National and International platforms. His concerts have received acclaim both in India and abroad. Apart from being a popular performing artiste, Shri Sopori is also a renowned teacher having propagated Santoor and Indian Classical music by giving lecture-demonstrations and teaching both in India and abroad.

For his contribution to the field of music, he has received numerous awards. Prominent among them being the prestigious Sangeet Natak Academy Award, the Telugu Academy Award (New Delhi), Sharada Samman (New Delhi) and Sakha Award (Punjab).
