Surmani Pandit Vinayak Torvi is an exponent of the Gwalior Gharana. Born on the auspicious day of Ganesh Chaturthi (4th Sept. 1948), Vinayak Torvi, who hails from Dharwad, had his initial training from Vidwans Tammanna Gurav, Narayanachar Dandapur and Narayan Rao Mujumdar.

A child prodigy, Vinayak Torvi was then groomed into a full-fledged artiste by Gayanacharya Gururao Deshpande, the doyen of 'Gwalior' and 'Agra' Gharana for 12 years under the Gurukula system. Later on he was trained by Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, the great maestro of the Kirana Gharana. Vinayak Torvi had the opportunity of being ably guided by Pandit Mallikarjun Mansoor, Pandit Basavaraj Rajguru and Dr. Gangubai Hangal during his post graduation studies in music. This voyage of training in various gharanas gave a wonderful blend to his unique style of rendition.

An acclaimed artiste of AIR and Doordarshan, Vinayak Torvi has received many awards and titles, both at State and National Level. Vinayak Torvi has performed in many major music festivals and conferences all over India including the Annual AIR Sangeet Sammelan. He has toured abroad extensively for concerts and Lec-Dems. Vinayak Torvi has to his credit many audiocassettes and CD's for leading labels. He is also popular for his jugalbandi performances with eminent Carnatic vocalists. An accomplished composer, Vinayak Torvi is sought after for devotional music too.

A revered Guru to many performing disciples and aspirants, Vinayak Torvi is the Founder - Trustee of 'Gururao Deshpande Sangeet Sabha', a public trust. Through the activities of this trust, Vinayak Torvi has been instrumental in strengthening Hindustani Classical Music platform for the generation of this age.
