Vimla Devi Foundation Nyas

Vimla Devi Foundation Nyas, Ayodhya has been established in the pious memory of the Late Rajkumari Vimla Devi of Ayodhya estate by her grandson Yatindra Mishra, on December 13, 1999.The princess was a talented semi-classical and Awadhi folk singer. She was very keen to promote all forms of music to bring to the fore the cultural panorama of India.

This Foundation aims at working for reinvigoration and preservation of Indian Culture, Philosophy, Arts, Literature and Music. With these objects in view, the Foundation organizes a series of music programmes every year and awards Vimla Devi Samman to the maestros for their contribution.

As a new step in this direction, the Foundation has come out with some Landmark recordings of live concerts. It will be a matter of great satisfaction for the Foundation to provide the world of music with the rare repertoire.

Sunanda Sharma, the rising star of the Benares Gharana, was raised in a musical environment, having trained from the age five years from her father Pt. Sudarshan Sharma. She was awarded a gold Medal for her Masters in Music. In 1991 she entered into a musical bondage as the disciple of Dr. Smt. Girija Devi the eminent vocalist and pillar of the Benares Gharana.

Sunanda spent the next nine years imbibing the priceless heritage of this style, which specializes in classical Khayal, Tappa and Thumri. The Benares gharana, originating from the holy city, reflects the glory of spiritualism of classical music. The essence of expression and emotion (Bhava and Rasa) are the distinguishing features of this style. Accompanying her guru in public concerts afforded invaluable experience for Sunanda and formed the foundation for her blossoming forth as a solo artist.

A prolific performer in India and abroad, she is the youngest visiting teacher at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, for the first four years of this millennium. With a mellifluous voice and a breathtaking range of scale, Sunanda has received rave reviews for her performances all over the world and is hailed as the torchbearer of the
Benares Gharana.
