About this album

Shubhendra Rao is among the fore most of the new generation of Indian Classical Instrumentalists. A brilliant disciple of Sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar, he remains, hence a true exemplar of Baba Allauddin Khan Saheb's Maihar Senia Gharana.

Shubhendra was initiated into the world of music by his father, Shri N.R. Rama Rao, himself a veteran sitarist and a senior disciple of Pandit Ravi Shankar. Right from the age of four, he displayed an uncanny ability in grasping any element of the art and pursued it with deep dedication.

To continue his learning under the guidance of the legendary maestro, he moved to Delhi, living and learning in the true spirit of the Guru Shishya tradition. His talent was nurtured and molded so as to acquire an inner strength and perception. Soon, he started accompanying his Guru on the concert stage in many of his concerts.

He has been acknowledged by connoisseurs and critics as a worthy successor to his Guru's tradition. Playing with an easy confidence, he establishes a fine rapport, both with his music and his audience. His concerts are noted for their sensitivity, aesthetic appeal and musical insight. With a fine command of technique and innovative creativity, he evokes the various facets of the music and its moods, rendering a wholesome perspective and maturity, far belying his years.

An 'A' Grade artiste of the All India Radio, he has traveled extensively, performing at prestigious festivals in India, Europe, Canada and the USA. In the words of one reviewer, 'Shubhendra is a representative of the enlightened younger generation of musicians and hope of classical music in the future'.
