About this album

Sarod owes its orogn to Afgani musical instrument Rabab. At the beginning of the fourteenth century Amir Khusro intriduced it in Hindustani music. However the present day Sarod has been perfected by Ustad Allaudin Khan and his brother Usatd Aayat Ali Khan (both of Maihar Gharana). Its body is carved and hollowed from a single piece of a particular type of mould. The belly is covered with skin. The fingerboard has no frets. Sarod has 25 strings, four play the melody, four serve a drone and 17 are sympathetic strings. Sarod is played with a plectrum made from ivory or coconut shell.

Born in 1960 in Kolkata, Partho Sarathy is one of the most promising Sarod players in India. His serious, meditative approach makes his Sarod (music) sentimental.

Partho started his musical training under his father who was a disciple of Pandit Radhika Mohan Moitra, the great Sarod Maestro. Further he was trained for nearly a decade by Ustad Dhyanesh Khan - son and disciple of Legendary Sarod Player ustad Ali Akbar Khan. Since 1980 Partho has been under the direct guidance of Bharat Ratna - Pandit Ravi Shankarji. Since last 20 years he has been performing in India and all over the world. Parth expresses deep sentiments in his playing.
