Pandit Ravi Shankar was born on 7th Aril 1920 in Tilbhandeshwar - Varanasi. His father was Diwan of jhalawar. Panditji started his career as a dancer in brother uday Shankar's dancing troupe. In 1938 he went to Maihar in Madhya Pradesh to join Ustad Allauddin Khan to learn Sitar. In 1941 he married ustadji's daughter Annapoorna Devi. Panditji stayed with Ustadji for seven years.

Pandit Ravi Shankar is a versatile artiste. He was associated with Akashvani. his jugalbandies with the artistes of the Western Music paved way for fusion of various musical disciplines. he teamed up himself with the Classicists like Yehudi Menon, Jean Pierre, Phillip Glass, Zubin Mehta and Andre Previn and on the other hand with the Beatles too. He was contributed to the music of Bengali, Hindi and English movies some of which are Anuradha, Godan, Dharti Ke Lal, Neecha Nagar, Meera, Pather Panchali and Kabuliwala. He has composed music of 'Saare Jahan Se Achchha'. He has given to the music world disciples like Vijay Raghav Rao (Flute), Vishwa Mohan Bhatt (Guitar) and daughter Anoushka (sitar).

Pandit Ravi Shankar gave world platform to the Hindustani Classical Music. Panditji makes his sitar play effective and attractive and distinct by making use of Kritant Alankar which means playing more than one note in one pluck of plectrum (Zamzama, Gitkadi and Murki come under Kritant). For Aalap and Jod he uses Dhrupad Anga and for Gatkaari he uses Tanayyat of Khayaal Anga.

He has recorded the journey of his life in his autobiography 'My Music, My Life'. He received Sangeet Natak Academy in 1962. He became the first artiste to receive the 'Bharat Ratna' title.

He has a long standing relation with HMV Saregama. Some of his 78 rmp recordings with us have been compiled here under the series 'Classic Gold'.
