About this album

The guitar traces its origin to the gypsies and folk artistes of Spain. The instrument's capability to adjust to a wide repertoire of music saw its popularity spread from the classical music arena of Europe to the far East and the Indian sub-continent.

To make the guitar suitable to Indian classical music, Brij Bhushan Kabra had to make several changes in the string set up, making the guitar more responsive to the intricate nuances of Indian classical music.

Tutored under the guidance of sarod maestro Ali Akbar Khan, he gave his first performance in 1960, at Calcutta. Thereafter, he never looked back. Acquiring fame and international acclaim, Brij Bhushan Kabra has performed individually and with internationally acknowledged maestros like Shiv Kumar Sharma, Hariprasad Chaurasia, V.G.Jog and Rais Khan.

This album features an extensive exposition of the raga Ahir Bhairav. This raga is Bhairav in purvanga and Kafi in uttaranga. It is a very beautiful sampoorna raga. The combination of komal nishad and komal rishab is central to this raga's distinctive appeal.

The second raga is Ramdasi Malhar - a Malhar variation which adopts both Gandhars.
