Flautist Natesan Ramani, globally commended musical genius learnt the skill of playing the instrument from the great maestro T.R.Mahalingam, simply known as 'Mali'. The smooth mellifluous techniques of blowing and fingering inherited from his Grandfather Azhiyur Narayanaswamy Iyer and Guru Malu as honed through his own research. He has developed various fingering and blowing techniques, which showcase his exquisite ragabhava, precision of notes and control over laya. Dr. Ramani is the first genre to introduce the long bass flute that enables longer reach in the lower octaves. He is a natural teacher, capable of spotting talent and drawing out the best from his students. Dr. Ramani's Academy of Flute established in 1985 plays a key role in making the Carnatic flute accessible to every interested person around the world.

He has given nearly 75 Jugalbandhi concerts, out of which 40 were with Sri Hari Prasad Chaurasia. He has won many awards like 'Sangeetha Kala Nipuna', 'Venu Gana Mani', 'Sangeetha Kala Siromani', 'Sangeetha Kala Sagara', 'Sangeetha Kalanidhi', 'Isai Perainjar',
'Sangeetha Kala Choodamani'.
