About this album
M.L.Vasanthakumari (fondly known as MLV) is part of the Trinities of Carnatic Music, along with M.S.Subbulakshmi and D.K.Pattamal. She gave Carnatic Music a new form. Hailing from a musical family, M.L.Vasanthakumari received training under the illustrious vocalist, Sangeetha Kalanidhi G.N.Balasubramaniam and she became the torchbearer of the GNB style. An imaginative and versatile artiste, not only did she command a vast repertoire, she exhibited the beauty, finesse and intricacies of a Raga.
She was exceptionally renowned for her authenticity and rendition of Purandaradasa Krithis, which transported the listeners into realms ecstasy. Her greatness lay in perceiving change within the accepted parameters.
The album begins with a Muthuswamy Dikshithar krithi 'Gananayakam' in raga Poornashadjam
followed by the famous composition 'Jaya Jaya' in Nattai, a Purandaradasar Composition. With a brisk alap in raga Karaharapriya, MLV sings a composition of Thyagaraja 'Rama Nee Samanamevaru'. In the composition of Venugopal, 'Vaa Muruga Vaa' in raga Begada, the listener can easily visualize Lord Muruga in all his glory. Rendered with Bhakthi and Bhava, she goes on to sing a Swathi Thirunal composition 'Seve Srikantam' in Raag Mohana Kalyani.
