Live Concert December Season 2001 Vol 2

KV. Narayanaswamy

About this album

KVN as he is popularly known was born on 11th November 1923, into a family of musicians at Palghat, Kerala. Father Viswanatha Bhagavatar and Grandfather Narayana Bhagavatar were both musicians of repute. Great grandfather Vishwan Bhagavatar was an exponent of Krishnaattam and had been honored by Ayilyam Tirunal, the ruler of Travancore.

KVN has his training in music initially from C.S Krishna Iyer, Palghat Mani Iyer and later from Papa K.S Venkataramaiah. In 1942, he became a disciple of the trailblazing Ariyakkudi T Ramanuja Iyengar and remained so till the latter's death. His music bears many of the vital elements of Ariyakkudi's style, such as the brief alapanas, which manage to pack the complete essence of ragas into them and the short and imaginative forays into swaras.

Over the years, KVN has created a style of his own. He hallmarks of his music are complete fidelity to shruti, a relaxed style of rendition and great bhavam. The word 'Sowkhyam' would possibly be an apt description of KVN's music. KVN has received numerous awards and honors. He received the Sangeetha Nataka Academy Award in 1977, Sangeeta Nipuna from the Mylapore Fine arts club in 1982, Sangeeta Kalanidhi from the Music Academy in 1986, the Sangeeta Kala Shikhamani from the Music society in 1989 and the Nada Brahmam from Narada Gana Sabha in 2001.

The December Music Season of 2001, in Chennai, witnessed few but sterling performances from KVN. His concerts witnessed record audiences proof to the ever fresh quality of his music.
