Padmabhooshan Pandit Basavraj Rajguru was born in Yaliwal village of Dharward District (now in Karnataks). His father put him under the tutelage of Swami Panchakshari Gawai of Shivayoga Math of Gadag. Swamiji belonged to Gwalior Gharana.

Dr. Gangubai Hangal brought this child prodigy called Basavral to Mumbai and introduced him to Shri. Bukhari of the All India Radio and Shri G.N. Joshi of the Gramophone Company of India Ltd. After coming in the limelight Pandit Basavraj was attracted
to Kirana Gayakee. He learnt Kirana Gayakee from Pandit Sureshbabu Mane, Mumbarak Ali, Abdul Waheed Khan, Roshan Ali and pandit Sawai Gandharva. His developed Gayakee was a blend of Gwalior, Kirana and Patiala Gharanas.

He was honored with titles like Sangeetagnya, Sangeet Sudhakar and Sangeet Ratna. He was a recipient of Central and State Sangeet Natak Academi Awards. An honorary Doctorate was conferred upon him in 1989 and he was holder of the 'Padmabhooshan' title in 1991.

Pandit Basavraj Rajguru was always a much sought after vocalist of Hindustani Music. He died in July 1991. He is survived by a galaxy of disciples like Ganapati Bhat, Somnath Mardur, Parameshwar Hedge, Shreepad Hedge, Shantaram Hedge, Sangeeta Katti and Shivanad Patil.
